Ecogeomorphic response of a coastal dune in southern Portugal regulated by extrinsic factors

چکیده
• Plant community zonation and geomorphology changed along a coastal dune segment. Variation of biogeomorphic variables alongshore correlated with shoreline trends. Two distinct ecogeomorphic states have been identified in close proximity. Identified explained by long-term change rates. Sediment retention capacity local vegetation was low due to abiotic factors. Coastal dunes are complex landforms whose morphology results from various interactions between biotic Here, we explore the longshore variability morphological features, plant distribution accumulation patterns segment (1.4 km-long) located at downdrift end sandy peninsula Ria Formosa, Portugal. To understand main drivers observed implications for response, this information combined recent multidecadal evolution data. A Field Experiment for Coastal Dune Reconstruction
Coastal dunes, as a whole, represent a natural barrier between the sea and the land, playing a vital role in the coastal defense against the waves and tides. Compared to the use of hard, man-made structures, not only is it a less expensive method to counteract the coastal erosion problems, but it is also a method that has higher ecological and scenic values in the environmental management aspec...
متن کاملTrampling Effects on Coastal Dune
Long-term human trampling on coastal dune vegetation was analysed using eight 100 × 100m study areas ranging in trampling intensity JJ'om little or no past trampling pressure to severe trampling pressure. All trampling levels significantly reduced species diversity. Total vegetation cover was significantly reduced only in areas with severe and heavy trampling pressure. Where long-term moderate ...
متن کاملGenesis of coastal dune fields with vegetation
Vegetation greatly affects the formation and dynamics of dune fields in coastal areas. In the present work, we use dune modelling in order to investigate the genesis and early development stages of costal dune fields in the presence of vegetation. The model, which consists of a set of coupled equations for the turbulent wind field over the landscape, the saltation flux and the growth of vegetat...
متن کاملProcess-based Modeling of Coastal Dune Development
A model that predicts sediment transport due to wind action can be valuable addition to hydrodynamic models to describe the long-term interaction between land and water. This thesis presents the application of an aeolian transport model [Sauermann et al., 2001, Kroy et al., 2002] as a tool for the evolution of coastal nourishments and dunes. The model was originally developed to describe import...
متن کاملDune Slack Vegetation in Southern New Zealand
A range of slack vegetation in southern New Zealand was described by detailed sampling of four dune slacks, contrasting in topographic situation and in vegetation. Comparison is made with a slack previously sampled on Stewart Island. The five slacks differed markedly in the plant communities present. One slack, where there was considerable peat accumulation, was dominated by the megaherb Phormi...
